About the Artist...

A native Texan, artist John St. John was a self-taught American success story. In the same way that Frederic Remington chronicled the rigors of the West through paintings, St. John (who lived from 1929 to 2000) exuded passion for the Texas oil industry. He grew up in South Dallas and often traveled with his father on sketching trips across Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma and Louisiana. Teachers and parents encouraged him as early as grade school to follow a distinct natural talent.

Texas Petroleum Gallery is the exclusive representative of the Petroleum Series by early Texas artist John St. John. This collection of more than 40 original paintings and fine print editions provide an extraordinary artistic glimpse into an epic chapter in petroleum history. The artist captured the spirit, determination and grit of early oil and gas pioneers in colors and brush strokes as vivid and bold as the legendary men and events portrayed. The collection includes paintings of historic Texas oilfields, railroads, legendary wildcatters, filling stations, and the Texas Rangers.

St. John's paintings are represented in important private and corporate collections. Largely self-taught, he developed a unique style that he adapted to the mood and subject of his work. He believed his experience as a sculptor gave depth to his painting. In addition to the Petroleum Series, he left a body of work that reflects his life-long exploration of color and a variety of subjects including still life, nudes, landscapes, industry and portraiture.
